Agta boy The Philippine Agta

A modern center of democracy, commerce, and tourism, the Philippines possesses a rich heritage with ties to Spain, Mexico, the United States, and Asian nations, as well as to peoples that migrated from the Asian mainland in long ages past.

This exhibit features the people of greatest antiquity, the Agta, who have retained a way of life similar to that of the early inhabitants of virtually every continent. Sometimes misunderstood, the Agta show the great skill and resourcefulness of humankind, successfully utilizing their natural forest environment and developing a symbiotic relationship with their more agricultural neighbors.

The exhibit explores profound environmental changes, completely beyond Agta control, that have thrust them into a period of rapid and irreversible cultural and social change. This exhibit is a 'must see' for everyone interested in the changing social environment of the remaining hunter-gatherer societies today.
